Traditional enough?

Watching Orkestra Melayu Singapura (OST) made me realise how the performers are trying to attract youngsters to watch Malay traditional concerts or shows by infusing modern and hip musical instruments into their music piece. For example, the bass guitar or the drum set.

Many times, I hear people say that Malay traditional music are in a brink of extinction because youths nowadays are listening to more varied genres like indie, pop, rock and so forth. So, the solution for these Malay artists is to include musical instruments that are more recognised thus, making music that are more "hip" to suit these youths interest level.

That may be a great idea. However, don't you ever wonder that it might be stamped in these youths mind that Malay traditional music must include all these bass guitar? Because that is what they know of. Yes, the music piece they heard consists of the same ol' same ol' traditional instruments like the gendang, rebana and whatnot. But, without these "trendy" (so I must say) musical instruments, youths would not be interested to take a listen.

I bet, the whole lot of youths that watched OST last night will not attend a full piece original Malay traditional orchestra if there were any.
